STEP-BY-STEP DIY Crêpe Paper Rose Tutorial
Today I’m going to show you how to make a crêpe paper Rose. I’ve got a few examples here and we’re going to go over how to make the rose itself and then how to make some nice crêpe paper foliage.
The materials we are using today are this lovely crêpe paper, it’s 180 grams Italian crêpe paper. We have the green for our leaves and we have this lovely ivory for our petals. You’ll notice on this we have ridges down the paper which is for stretching and we’re going to try to avoid having these on full display. However, when we make our our flowers sometimes it’s unavoidable, and on the green paper here we don’t have any ridges. So it’s really nice for having different sizes of leaves you’re not held back trying to fit them in between.
Next we have our tacky glue, this dries nice and clear and it’s a quick drying so perfect for crafting. You can get lots of different brand ones on the market, but if you make sure it dries clear and it’s quick drying then it’s perfect.
You also want an old paintbrush, one you don’t mind getting a bit gluey or you can use an old school glue stick. We also have a 3cm polystyrene ball which is for the very center of our Rose.
We also need some florist tape , this comes in different types of greens, browns and even white. You can really get to match whatever colour or flower you’re making.
I’m going to use our glue gun, big paper scissors, little paper snips, chain nose pliers or needle nose pliers, or even round nose pliers would work just as long as they’re small enough and to curl our wire at the end.
We have some cutters for chopping wire to the right size. We’re also going to be working with this, which is an upholstery needle, you can also use something like an awl, or even a kebab skewer would work.
That would be perfect, this is purely to manipulate and curl in the very end of our our petals here just to create the shape that we want and so we’ll go over how to do that in a little while.
The wire that we’re using today we’re using two different gauges of wire and the thicker one is for our Rose this is an 18 gauge wire and the thinner is a 24 gauge wire both of these are paper covered wires.
We’re using the paper covered, as personally I feel that the it sticks better to the crêpe paper that we’re using and also the the floristry tape I find that the glossier ones they slip quite a lot. So you want to use the paper one just for that little bit extra security.
So we’re going to go through a few stages here and so we’re going to look at how we make our leaves and look at how we cut our pattern and shape it
Then how we stick it all together to create our final leave here and we’re then going to go on and look at the process of creating our paper flower.
______
This sort of breaks it down into the very different stages that we’re going for so first off we’re going to cut our leaves. What we want to do is we want to grab our leaf pattern and now you’ll notice on here there’s a directional arrow on here then you want to line that up with.
The direction of the crêpe paper crêpe paper is quite a lot like fabric where it has a grainwe’re going with the grain here and we’re going to chop up and our leaves. So you want to lay it on there so it’s nice and straight against the grain and we’re just gonna use it as a guide.
It doesn’t have to be perfect – cut a length of the cracked paper again making sure it’s lined up I just want to hold it and we’re just going to chop up some of these rectangles and keep all our little scrap pieces for.
I don’t know when they’re going to come in handy. we’re going to keep all of our chopped up rectangles together and I’m going to turn it. We have the diagonal top to bottom here, and I’m going to chop through them all on the diagonal all the way through.
I’m gonna let that side sit down and this side I’m going to flip over like that. What you’ll see now is that the the green line that we had initially is now on a diagonal and is now coming down into the center line here all right.
We’re going to make our fresh leaf grab the first top two and we’re going to work with the left side here we’re going to take a piece of our wire the thin wire.
The 24 gauge and we’re going to chop roughly uh three inch piece of wire now what we’re going to do is we’re going to take our tacky glue that we have on our little paintbrush and the very end third of the wire we’re going to pop on some of this glue.
What we don’t want to do is we don’t want to put too much glue on as you can find that the if you’ve got. Too much glue on it ends up staining the paper or sort of bleaching it makes just goes off colour.
We want don’t want that to happen. Let’s make sure you’ve got a good bit of glue on that end third and then I’m going to take this and where it ends here the glue we’re going to just put that onto the very end of our half.
We’ll write right on the edge it’s gonna sit on there and I hold it down with my nail just to make sure it’s nice and sturdy and while holding that I’m going to take my glue and I’m just gonna pop a little bit of glue all the way up that center bit, the center fold.
Again we don’t want to use too much we don’t want to saturate the paper or it will cause buckling and discoloration that you.
You don’t want to have on your final leaf and then I’m just going to put a tiny bit more on our wire the edge that’s facing us just to make sure it’s secure and then we’ll take our other half and we’re going to pop that on just.
So it covers so this edge will cover just cover the wire we’re not doing a huge overlap so hold it down and you want to stick it down as you go it’s always good to just have a quick double check that you picked up the correct piece and you definitely got the Grain Lines coming in to meet each other at the diagonal right.
So that’s stuck down now I like to take my nail and just gently push it in to the wire at the bottom now you’ll notice that the wire is only coming up to here on our leaf so this means that the leave isn’t too like rigid it moves a little just like it would sorry in nature.
It also means it’s got some shape and form and we can bend it and manipulate it to the desired shape for our end bruises all right so turn it over and just you want to make sure you’re covering your your wire that you put down and we’re not seeing any loads of glue and things.
Now we’re going to make this into a leave shape so here’s one that we’ve chopped up before so what you can do is you can either cut it freehand with your scissors or you can use a template and line it up so the center of the template is at the point here and just go around with your scissors and chop that up, if not you can just do it freehand.
There we have our leaf and you want to keep doing that until you have the amount that you want so I’ve got a bundle here that I’ve done and and then these are sort of just ready to add into duplicates or onto roses and things like that so what we’ll do now is I’m going to show you how you bring these together.
Onto a single stem like this for your foliage which is really nice I tend to do it in odd numbers. You’ll have your either three or five on the stem and it’s great for filler in the bouquets.
We’re going to do that now I’m going to grab five of my leaves doesn’t matter if they’re different sizes that’s all fine and next I’m going to take some of my florist tape and I’m going to take about an arms length of the tape and you can just pull that to break it off.
Then what you want to do is you want to stretch the tape to activate the glue on the underside and I always just sort of pop that down glue side down.
I know which side is which then I’m going to take just a glue stick so like a print stick or any old thing it doesn’t really matter it doesn’t matter about the brand or anything like that and this is purely just to give the this tape like a little bit of extra hold a little bit of extra security.
You want to take glue stick and I’m going to put a tiny bit on the very very edge the base of the sleeve like that and then down the stem you don’t need much it’s just to give it a little bit extra then we’re going to take our tape and I’m going to start by pressing that down onto the base of our leaf like that push it in tight and then start to wrap that round and we’re wrapping and sort of pressing it in at the same time.
You want to go around maybe four or five times just to make sure it’s nice and secure and getting good hold now at this stage we’re going to grab one of our thicker wires our 18 gauge wire and I’ve maybe come down a centimeter and a half here and I’m going to put this right up against it here.
There’s a little bit of a gap maybe three mils and then I’ve started here and what I’m going to do is hold them together and I’m going to start to wrap those two wires together.
I’m going to come down about an inch next what I’m going to do is I’m going to grab my next leaf and I’m going to just hold that down I’m going to pop that right on so that it’s right against the wire here don’t worry about bending them into shape or anything like that it’s just sitting right onto the wire.
I’m going to use the tape and I’m going to wrap right round covering the very base of that leaf calm down a bit more and then we’re going to add our next one again wrapping it holding it against the the center wire and wrapping it around so and then grab another one.
Check out how many I’ve got I’ve got four so I want to have another I’m going to grab one then come down a little bit more and I’m going to grab my glue stick again and I’m just going to run that down that.
Center wire and then we’re just going to tightly wrap this florist tape all the way down to the bottom and you’re covering up any little jaggy edges of the thinner wire as you go with this hand.
I’m sort of pushing it in and this hand I’m twisting it on now when we get down to here you’re going to trim off your excess leaving about a centimeter and add a little bit of glue onto there just to make sure it holds and I’m just going to roll that in so it’s nice and tight. Now we have something else like this so what you want to do is just very gently start to.
Bend these leaves out and you can start to manipulate the shape a little put them into the position that you want and there we go so there we’ve got our leaves onto a center stem and it’s great you can pop that right into a bouquet or you can add it in with other roses and things it makes a great filler and so that’s our leaves there we go.
N next we’re going to go over how we make our Rose how we make our flower here I’m going to grab our crêpe paper again this time our petal color that you want to use now what I tend to do is I’ll make I’ll cut out quite a few at once and do them in batches
You want to take your rose template just so you know the size and we’re going to line up again so the vertical line is the same as the green of your paper that we have here and you’re just going to fold over so we can cut a few hours at a time. I’m just going to chop right up here.
Now again while it’s still folded like this we’re just going to roughly chop the size that we need for each one and you could be mindful of where these are and where they will sit on the petals as well.
I’m going to cut these out make sure it’s all going to fit in on what we just chopped there we go and just hold the pattern down and chop around foreign so for each rows I tend to chop out about 20 to 26 petals it depends on the size that you want to have your finished rows you can have them as small as um nine petals but I really depends on what you want to go for so I tend to just chop out about 26.
What we want to do is we want to start shaping our petals. Here we have it here we have our right side and a wrong side to our our paper so what we want to do is um you have one side where you’ll see the groove in the paper is facing you it’s puffed out towards you and the other side where it’s sunk in away from you so I’m going to hold the side where the groove is sunk in away from me towards me.
What I’m going to do is I’m going to put my thumbs on the widest part of the petal here and my four fingers on the other side like that and I’m going to gently press in and peel it towards me so it creates this little cup that we have here do it again do again thumbs on the widest part of the petal like that and you’re gonna push your thumbs in and almost like away from you to create a shape that we have a few more times you want to do that with all your petals now for our rows we’re going to keep one petal aside like this where we haven’t done any more manipulation to it so we’re going to pop that here for the rest of our petals we’re going to take our all or needle or kebabs cure whatever you’re using as long as it’s um between two and three millimeters has a nice point and is fully rounded all right.
You’re going to take that we’re going to take one of our petals and we’re going to hold it on the very edge here and we’re going to curl each side down so that’s the left side and then the right side so you’re going to end up with something like this where the top is curled over and you’ve still got your cup here so again as you can see it’s curled over and that’s the other side there the other side there all right.
So it’s not folded or anything it’s just simply curved over on that top edge and we do one side at a time I’m going to do this side first and then that or vice versa that’s fine so pop them to the sides you want to work your way through all your petals doing that again so you’re holding you’re all on the very edge and you’re gonna roll the top roll it and then give a little little tug just to recreate your shape
so it’s time to start building our rows so we want to take um our thicker piece of wire your 18 gauge wire that you have here um and at the moment if we pop that through a pulsarine ball or even just try to start building the flower on it would just slip off um as there’s no curve everything just fall off the end so what you want to do is take your pliers and on the very end here we’re going to create a small Loop.
We’re just going to grab it now remember it’s a thicker wire so it will need a little bit of force to get to to create the loop we’re turning it round and that’s just made a little loop at the top here now what we’re going to do is we’re going to take this Loop and we’ll turn it bend it to a 90 degree angle all right bend over.
Now our wire comes up and we have this loop and it’s at an angle so what we do now is we take our polystyrene ball these are three centimeter poles that are in bowls obviously you can use smaller or larger for the different size of flowers that you want to make.
What we’re going to do is we take our wire and the non-looped end we’re going to push straight down through the center of our ball of course and doesn’t matter if little bits of pulse are in try and pull away and things like that this is all getting covered up it doesn’t matter I’m going to bring that right down and you see it’s going to sit in snug in here against the polystyrene ball.
To keep that in place we’re going to put a little bit of glue so pull it down a tad get your glue gun and just do a little squishy glue in there now obviously your glue gun it’s hot glue.
Please be mindful not to to burn yourself and I’ve done that many times but I like to sort of pat down and I don’t think I have any feeling left I’m burning my finger so many times but um yeah just so it’s nice and neat push it down into it all right but again it can be hot so please be careful.
What we want to do is we’re going to take a bit of our scrap that we had earlier from cutting out our petals and we’re just going to cut um a couple of little squares and what we’re going to do with these is we’re going to cover up the green of The Wire here that’s been left at the top you don’t have to do this but sometimes when we’re making the flower this can still be visible um in the very center.
Something that I do as I cover up so again take your your hot glue I’m going to put a little dot on here and then cover it up so a little bit glue take your scrap and pat it down and you can see you can still see a little bit of the green. I’m going to do it again.
I usually always put two on you just need to do it in the center because this is again it’s getting all covered up all right so now we’re gonna pop on our first petal so we’re going to take the petal that we set aside so the one that you haven’t curled in the top edges and again we’re going to cup it we’re going to cup it a little bit deeper than we did originally.
You want it to look like this okay then what we’re going to do is we’re going to pop this ball into the top area that we’ve cupped I’m going to have this little point in the very center of our polystyrene Bolt you want to pop it in and then get in in place and then you want to stretch the paper over the bowl.
Let you sort of put a little jacket on it like that and you’re going to hold it in place with one hand and then I’m just going to take some glue and squish it in there and then stick it back down here what we Pat make sure it’s all stuck there and then we’re going to deal with all this loose bit at the bottom again.
When we’re using hot glue you’ll get lots of little like threads of glue so just pull them off as you go now with the bottom area here you’re going to take your glue gun put a little bit of glue in like that and we’re just going to tuck these ends in and then twist it around the stem again that’s all getting covered up.
Don’t don’t worry too much about that so you end up a little bit like this now this has come loose a little so I’m just going to pop a tiny bit of glue on there and just give an extra little pattern so this is what stage we’re at here we’ve done our very very center of our flower.
Now we’re going to start building our petals onto it this is a sort of tricky bit here is to get the center and area how you like it so we’re going to need three petals that we’ve folded in the top curve let’s get rid of some of that glue so what you want to do is you want to take your first petal.
I’m going to line up over that center like so almost like so the top half is again curving down over it I’m going to hold that in place and take your second one and I’m going to do it.
It’s halfway halfway around this petal I’m going to line up your next one like that each one is overlapping so it’s half and then again take the third one so that’s overlapping by half I’m going to put this one at a slight angle this time like so.
Your final ball will look something like that when we glue it down so I’m going to hold it and make sure you’re happy with it you can always like make it tighter or make one side a little bit higher and that’s totally up to you these are our first ones to get set in place so you’re just gonna pop that glue down and glue down these overlapping petals.
Now just like before we have this uh sort of baggy bit at the bottom again what we do is we’re just going to pop a little bit of glue in there and you’re going to tuck everything in and twist it around that stem like that a little bit of extra glue on there just to tighten it up.
There we have our very center of our flower so now we’re going to start adding on our petals we’re just going to do one at a time and go around first one. I’m going to add I’m going to add it so that we have this this edge here is going to be in the center of this new one and then we’ll start to build around so take your petal and you’re going to pop a little bit of glue on the bottom I’ll line it up how you wish.
I’m going to stick it at the bottom there hold it on one side there and we’ll do this finger and I’m going to stretch the other side around so we’re putting on nice and tight so that’s how he’s looking now I’m gonna get another this one we’re going to line up.
It’s covering half of this side again pop it down and then on this side we’re going to stretch it around again and then we’re going to take one more for the center and do the same again where we put a little bit of glue we’re gonna cover half press down on the left and then take the right bottom Edge and stretch it around and you want to feel a tiny little bit more glue on this bit here just to finish just to finish it off so nothing’s moving out of position.
I use hot glue um as I find that it just is a lot quicker it’s not going to move anything and have done flowers with the tacky glue and I’ve found it takes a while of having to hold it and press it and to get it to stay in position and if you’re doing a lot of flowers it just it takes far too long basically but again you can make it just with the the tacky glue now we’re going to start adding the rest of our petals on and we’re going to add them so that the the peak the curve on each of our petals we’re going to aim to have them so that it sits in between the two here.
You want to have the peak in the center of the two so we keep it nice. It’s going around in a clockwork wise direction and it’s covering any gaps that we have to get cracking a little bit of glue so you’re going to position it so that it’s in the center there.
Again you want to pat it down on the left and I usually tighten it on the right
a little bit extra glue on the base here just to make sure we’re all stuck and then we keep going rhymes in a clockwise direction gluing the base finding that little gap in between and popping on each time you’re overlapping third to a half of the flower in front. From this direction I’m going to pop it on see it’s overlapping and then I’m going to tighten it around.
Now you just want to keep going round until you have the the size of the flower that you want. You might want to stop and have a smaller flower and you just fill in any spaces as well making sure that you’ve got a nice a nice shape to your rose.
I’ll get a few more on here foreign so again remove any threads of the glue that are there maybe stuck to you like the army or on the flower or on your mat now from this angle you can see these bits are a little bit loose so what I like to do is just go up back in with the glue gun and a little bit of glue and stick it down just so we know it’s going to hold its shape.
There we go so we’ve got this we’ve got our flower here we’ve got this nice little bit here that we’re going to cover up with our calyx which is the the leaves at the very base of your flower and then we’re going to wrap our stem and add a leaf.
The next thing we’re going to do is we’re going to make a calyx which is the very base of your flower the the leaves so if we have a look on this flower here you can see your flowers ended and then we’ve got those nice leaves coming out from the base.
Then we’ve wrapped it and added another Leaf one to here all right to do this we’re gonna take our leaf pattern that we have here and with the same green crêpe paper that we’ve used for our leaves to start with and you want to line it up again be mindful of the green grain line of your paper and on your your pattern piece.
We’re just going to chop one out obviously if you’re doing lots you want to do do it in batches you’re going to Chopper a lot more than one you can either use a pattern to chop the calyx or you can just do it freehand if you’re using the pattern again you’re going to line it up pop it on here and you’re going to just cut out these zigzags that we have and I quite like to just do it freehand and but if you want to use a pattern that’s fine if you’re going to do it freehand what I do is I take my piece of crap and
I’m going to fold it in half lengthways and then we’ll turn it so that’s the cut
edge here take my scissors I’m going to do my first cut I usually do one all the way down so that it’s curved and this is the start of my zigzag here and then what I’m going to do is our our zigzag is going to come down to just under halfway down our piece of crêpe paper I’m going to start chopping and I want to do one two three and then this last one is right on the the fold there all right let’s use the end up with something with the five zigzags and it’s just under halfway down here and what we want to do is see on here this has gone a little bit this is a bit wide at the top.
You just got to take scissors and just make that a nice a nice point in that was the only one next we’re going to do is we’re going to shape each of these little leaves so first of all like we did with the petals we’re going to cup it this time I’m going to cup it towards you you’re going to put your thumbs on the top fingers underneath and you’re gonna pull that apart and push it in so you create a little cup like we have here and do that to each of your little leaves. Then show something like this, then what you’re going to do is take your your thumb and first finger and you’re just going to twist the very end there.
Just a little twist to help the shape that’s it what we’re going to do is we’re going to bring these two edges together to create a sort of tube that will then thread onto our Rose now I have the pressed in leaves facing me, so the curve is facing me.
When I do this you want to have them on the inside not on the outside where they would be indented in the way so we’ve got them out puffed out out the way let’s take one side I’m going to add a little bit of glue at the base here for about two two and a half centimeters up on the edge and bring the other side round and stick them together so you should have a little tube like that on your finger.
Now with that on your finger just bend out your your leaves like that and at this stage we’re going to manipulate them a little bit more when they’re on the rows with your leaves all facing up the way like that you’re going to grab your paper rose and we’re going to thread it down the middle and then push it right up so it’s nice and snug hold it in place nice and snug right against the base of the flower take your glue and you’re gonna squishy glue in there and then we’re going to pat that down and twist this excess that we have around the stem this will get covered up with your your floors tape put a little bit extra glue on here just to make sure it’s all going to sit nice and pushing it in I’m going to take off your excess glue there we go so now what I’m going to do is where we overlap them this little lip here.
I’m just going to put a bit of extra glue in there just to make sure we don’t see that and again remove any excess glue now what you want to do is take your little leaves and we’re going to bend them back and fan them out a little now you’ll notice we’ve got a bit of a space in here so what I like to do is pull it back a little bit more nice and gentle and just put a tiny bit of glue in and just push that up with my finger so it’s nice and hidden and go around each of them and press that in a little bit more on this side just tiny dot of glue.
There we go so now all we have to do is we need to wrap our stem all the way down here with our florist tape again you’re going to grab your glue stick and we’re going to pop it onto this excess piece of the calyx there that we have and pop it on there and I’m going to run it all the way down and I’m going to grab an arms length of the florist tip break that off and I’m going to stretch it to activate the glue now you want to leave that so that it’s nice and snug sat here just before this curve here up to the floor
It goes straight and then it curves up so you’re going to sit that right at the base of the curve I’m going to wrap it around a few times to get started and then this area here where the the wire is meeting the paper and when I again just go over that area a few times just to make sure there’s not such an obvious bump in the wire and then when you’re happy you’re going to start to travel down the wire again I’m turning with this hand and I’m pressing it in with my other hand I’m gonna go all the way down to the base. There we go and you’re going to chop off your excess leaving about a centimeter and put a tiny bit of glue on the base there and then stick it down so there you have it there you have your rose.
You can put that with your foliage that you have here you could add them in together just look nice and or you can also add your leaves onto your stem itself so we’ll do that just now just to go over it so I’m going to grab three of my leaves that I made earlier.
I’m going to take a length of my florist tape and stretch it out okay and we’ll grab the first one and again you want to take your glue and we’re going to pop it onto the very base of the flower and down the wire and then take your tape and we’re just going to wrap that tightly around starting at the very base so it’s covering a little bit of the base of the of the paper where it meets the the wire go around a few times before you start traveling down so you want to do this to all three of your leaves and you want to come all the way down to the base of the wire this time on all three of your leaves
and just break it off and put that to the side for a second so we’re going to do that same technique for all three a little bit of glue wrapping it around a few times and then start traveling down The Wire no got a bit left over so I’m going to use that in a second what wants to do as I’m going to take my three leaves and I’m just gonna lay them out on top of each other like this maybe at different heights it’s up to.
You can always manipulate them at the end again a little bit of glue on the ends I’m leaving about an inch and then I’m going to add the glue now I’m going to wrap them together from about an inch down.
I’m gonna go around a couple of times then I’m going to grab my rose that we just made I’m going to come down to where I want it on the on the rose stem I’m going to hold them together hold the we’ve got our leaves wire and we’ve got our stem I’m going to bring them together and then I’m going to use our tape and I’m going to start to wrap them all together nice and tight no loose tape and you want to wrap all the way down far as you can use up all your tape makes it more secure and again when we get to our end bit grab your glue pop a little bit on and then stick that down now you have your leaves sort of like this so obviously it looks too stuck.
What you want to do is you want to pull them out gently and put them into the position that you want there we go that’s it so we have our Center rows and we have the three leaves all attached on the same stem if you want to manipulate your leaves even further with it being cripped paper you can bend them.
If you want them to be a bit more natural you can start to randomly put little pools gently pulling the paper away from itself like that or twisting the wire so you have more of a shape to your Leaf instead of it being straight but again it looks great even when they’re straight as well that’s that so we’ve done these together so that’s our rose that we’ve done with our our leaves and we’ve done our separate leaves here. So you can start to build up um a bouquet can bend them manipulate the shape a little bit bring them all together use different shades different colors.
There you have it that’s our crêpe paper rose that’s it, thanks for watching.
